Tampa Electric’s Polk Power Plant was selected for the Power Plant of the Year award for 1997. The 250 Mw facility is one of the cleanest electric generating plants in the world. The plant uses General Electric gasification technology to convert coal to syngas. The impurities and hazardous materials are removed before the syngas is sent to the turbines. .
The Department of Energy recognizes the Tampa Electric Company Polk Power Station as a leader in power plant technology. “We congratulate Tampa Electric and its partners on a project that is receiving well-deserved recognition as a pacesetter for the power industry of the 21st century,” said past Secretary of Energy Federico Peña.
