In 1997, the Wabash River Coal Gasification Power Plant in Terre Haute, Indiana was selected as Power Plant of the Year. The plant started up in 1996. The DOE recognizes the Wabash Power Plant as a major U.S. success for coal power generation using clean coal gasification technology provided by ConocoPhillips. The plant gasifies 2,500 tpd Illinois coal and removes the NOx and SOx to below the required levels. The syngas is used to power gas turbines that produce 265 Mw electricity.

The project has had numerous reports written and papers presented at technical conferences due to its cutting edge technology and stunning success. One such paper is the DOE report on the Wabash River Gasification Plant. Another is the ConocoPhillips report on the Wabash River Gasification Power plant..
